- Examining Materials that Allow Electric Current and Electric Field Control of Magnetisation using Polarised Soft X-ray Scattering

ABSTRACT: One of the goals of spintronics research is to be able to control and influence magnetism with electric currents or fields. This has huge potential in applications by improving the energy efficiency of magnetic memory. In this work we will firstly examine the measurements of current induced hysteresis loops in thin films. [i] This work led to a full study of hysteresis loops using soft X-ray reflectivity where a combination of linear and non-linear effects were found to potentially complicate their interpretation. [ii] In addition we have managed to solve the magnetic structure in a W type hexaferrite. This structure, which includes a cycloidal magnetic plane, would be compatible with a type II multiferroic where a change in electric field could have a direct effect on the magnetic moments. In addition to interpreting measurements of hysteresis using soft X-ray scattering this talk with highlight the power of using polarisation dependent scattering to fully characterise chiral magnetic structures.
